The house is about 15 minutes drive from the A7 – the “Autoroute du Soleil” – the main motorway down the East of France from Calais. It splits at Orange turning east to Italy and west to Spain Come off at Junction 19, at Bollene before Orange.
With two or more drivers, and a two or three disciplined fuel stops, it’s a comfortable nine hour drive from Calais to the house.
There are tolls around Reims, and around Lyons but given that French motorways are vastly superior and much less crowded than UK ones, the tolls, at about 80€ in total are well worth it.
There are several airports within easy reach.
- Marseille is the most used and 111 Km away which takes about 75 minutes. Ryanair and BA both fly to it.
- Nîmes is 82 Km and under an hour.
- Montpelier is 120 Km and 1 hour and 25 minutes.
- Lyon is further away, 208 Km, but driveable in about 2 hours.
By far the best way to travel is by train. Eurostar goes direct several days a week from St Pancras International to Avignon TGV and it takes under six hours. The return journey requires a stop and disembarking at Lille in order to go through security but it’s not onerous and takes less than half an hour.
All the main car rental companies have offices at Avignon station and the house is about 45 minutes drive.
